Day One
First session- Sugata Mitra
Being able to access this site on the ipad proved to be a challenge as it told me that I needed adobe flash. Always a pain. However, having being at this conference last year we were introduced to an app called 'rover' which enabled people to get around problems like this. Going through rover proved to be successful and here we are. It is a little slower but it is working.
Points
* students will teach themselves about how to use the computer and access the internet
* our generation of students often set the bars higher than what we might set
* The concept of SOLE- Self Organised Learning Environments
* Single child with a single computer will not get 20% of what a group of children might get around a single computer
* Studies around Neuroscience in relation to testing procedures- eliminates all threat perceptions / sessions where rational thinking is stopped and the link to why students might not do so well in a test.
* Analogy used of that problem that you might have had at work that you aren't able to solve, but as soon as you get home and you are cooking dinner, watching tv, other types of stimulus around, that ends up triggering the solution to the problem.
Session 2- Weebly- See InspireBlog
Session 3- Making Movies in the Middle Years
* Not so much about the technology, it's about the narrative and the grammatical and literacy features associated with it.
* Use a range of shots- long, mid, close, extreme close up, tilt, panning v tracking Questions can revolve around the purpose for why various shots have been used?
* Have a camera on hand, plugged into the computer / whiteboard to actually show and demonstrate what you might be talking about
* Less is more- short, sharp clips to convey meaning
* Avoid spelling out the story to the audience.
* In order to create something powerful, use- short, sharp images / not a lot of dialogue, consider what is said rather than how much / suitable music / lighting eg. Harry Potter and the Mirror of Erised (2 minutes of the movie where only 2 words are spoken)
* Choice is made as to what is included and what is left out in order to convey messages to the audience.
* Avoid breaches of copyright / consider privacy and child protection issues / collect permission to film and publish before you start
* Different angles and levels of lighting are used to create atmosphere and set the mood.
* Save money- use your hand / flood light from a hardware store or some foam board to assist with lighting
* Issues with sound- be aware of background noise, especially wind / monitor audio while filming-plug a headphone into the camera's audio jack
Session 5- TwitEd
* Online chat / micro-blog tool / connects people all over the place
* Twitter second to Facebook on the social network scale
* Twitter is about connecting with the world
* Check out - twitterfall / tweetdeck / hoot suite (tweets can be scheduled to be sent out at various times) / flipboard
* Teachers can use Twitter to share resources / ideas
* For students- 1) hold hashtags chat (excursions / incursions / special event days)
2) can ask experts about various things
3) summarising exercises / reminders about projects and homework
4) for hosting a poll
5) connecting with the community, seeing what other schools are doing
